There is one more game here as well, though it’s in movie form: “Kingdom Hearts Re:coded,” originally a Nintendo DS remake of a mobile “Kingdom Hearts” game, is watchable but not really playable.

It’s another fun adventure, though at no point does it carry the weight (or the ridiculousness) of the best moments of “Kingdom Hearts 2.” The gameplay of “Birth by Sleep” is similar to that of “Kingdom Hearts 2,” though there’s the added element of a “command deck” – essentially a set of powers that can be triggered to get the player out of tight spots. This is no doubt due to its origins as a PSP game, so the downgrade in the visuals is understandable, if slightly disappointing. It’s an enjoyable game, nearly as much as “Kingdom Hearts 2,” though the cracks in its HD facade show a little more. And there’s a bit of a “Disney on parade” feel to the proceedings: “Hey, look, there’s Huey, Dewey and Louie!” “Oh neat, we get to fight alongside Mulan!” “Wait, what is Captain Jack Sparrow doing here?”Įach world and its associated characters bring their own challenges, and the exploring, puzzle-solving and combat are consistently thrilling, even if the story just keeps heaping on layer after layer of ridiculousness.Īlso included is “Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep,” playable on a console for the first time. The story is hilariously convoluted, but it serves its purpose as an excuse for players to experience many different Disney environments on our way to solving the game’s many mysteries.
